FEDEV ORGANISES A WORKSHOP ON ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM FOCUSING ON PLASTIC POLLUTION.

‎The Foundation for Environment and Development (FEDEV), in partnership with the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW), is pleased to announce the organisation of a three-day training workshop on environmental reporting on plastic pollution. The workshop will take place from 22nd to 24th June 2026 in Bafoussam, West Region of Cameroon.

The workshop will bring together 40 media professionals, particularly representatives of community radio and television stations, as well as correspondents of national television stations operating in the West Region of Cameroon.

WORKSHOP STRUCTURE

The three-day event will be organised as follows:
Day One: Peer-to-peer learning sessions and discussions on environmental reporting and plastic pollution.
Day Two: Fieldwork activities during which participants will investigate, document, and report on real-life plastic pollution situations.
Day Three: Presentation of reports in a news format, experiences from the field by participants.

BACKGROUND

Plastic pollution presents complex and far-reaching environmental and public health challenges that require the active participation of all stakeholders. As society’s reliance on plastics, particularly single-use plastics, continues to grow, so do the associated environmental risks. In this context, the media plays a critical role in raising awareness, educating communities, and influencing public behaviour.

The increasing threat of plastic pollution highlights the need for stronger media engagement, especially among community radio and television journalists. Continuous capacity building is therefore essential to equip media professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to report effectively on environmental issues.

OBJECTIVE

The training seeks to strengthen the capacity of media practitioners to effectively report on plastic pollution, raise public awareness, and promote sustainable environmental practices. It aims to enhance participants’ understanding of environmental challenges and improve their ability to produce impactful and targeted reporting on plastic pollution.

Ultimately, the workshop seeks to expand public education and awareness through radio and television programmes, including broadcasts in national languages, thereby fostering an environmentally conscious society and encouraging behavioural change towards a plastic pollution-free environment.

Given the critical role of the media in shaping public opinion and influencing behaviour, the participation and support of stakeholders will greatly enrich the discussions and contribute to the successful outcomes of this workshop.
