Fedev Calls On Plastic Production Cuts On World Environment Day 2025

FEDEV sets aside week-long activities to observe World Environment Day 2025 under the theme “end Plastic pollution”, a campaign led by the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP. These activities encompassed community education and sensitization, waste clean-up, radio talks, tree planting, online advocacy, green walk (plastic march) workshops, and awareness raising on the 5th session of the International Negotiating Committee on Plastic pollution (INC5.2). INC5.2 will conclude the Legally Binding treaty to end plastic pollution while focusing on the full life cycle of plastics, including production.

In collaboration with the South West Regional Delegation for Environment, FEDEV took part in the green walk (plastic march) on the streets of Buea, educating the population on the importance of reusing or refusing plastics and seeking nature-based alternatives to single-use plastic bags. FEDEV further made presentations to spotlight the FEDEV plastic activities and enhance compliance by educating on the plastic laws and policies in Cameroon.

FEDEV reached a population of over six hundred thousand people through some radio and TV stations in Cameroon. Its team educated the population of the North West Region on the importance of World Environment Day, the hazards of plastic pollution, and the urgent need to collaborate in ending plastic pollution. There was a similar activity by FEDEV staff on a South West TV station, which was streamed on Facebook. It was an opportunity for FEDEV to foster national awareness on INC5.2, which is hoped to be the final round of negotiations for an international legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution scheduled for August 5-14, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland.

In the North West, over two hundred youths gathered for a one-day workshop organised by the Network of Environmental stakeholders in Cameroon, chaired by the Regional Delegate for Environment, North West Region, Mr. Mue Denis.

It was aimed at valorising plastic waste (transforming plastic waste into reusable goods), thereby eradicating plastic pollution in the region. During this event, Penn Ndikeh, a FEDEV volunteer, instilled in them the practice of how to sort plastic waste before transferring it for other uses. He gave an in-depth of a plastics map; from production to branding, uses, market distribution, consumption, and final disposal of the waste.

According to Forsuh Emmaculate, a participant of the workshop, the workshop is timely as it comes during a period when the region is flooded with plastics. She has learned a lot from the workshop when it comes to plastic valorisation. She hopes to transmit the skills acquired to her neighbours.

FEDEV encourages the use of eco-friendly products as alternatives to plastics and combats climate change by planting trees on World Environment Day. This activity was carried out in the premises of the Delegation for Environment in the North West Region of Cameroon.

This world Environment Day activities were carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Environment Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development through the Delegations in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon.
